Day 07 - A picture of your most treasured item.
Item... I...tem... So, not living? Pets and Steve are exempt?
Well, to be honest, my favorite and prized possessions are my pictures, and my LJ. Both of those are relatively intangible. I guess you could say that my most treasured item is physical evidence of memories!
A lot of people talk about how worthless pictures are, or that you're wasting moments by being behind the lens, but the truth is, memories fade. As you get older and make new memories, old ones slip into the deeper recesses of your mind, and are more difficult to bring back up to your short-term memory. Some are even forgotten. Having pictures and my LJ to look back on and remember even the smallest happy thing... that's worth so much to me, especially because I seem to forget pretty often.
Um... photo? How about a picture of some of my facebook albums :)
Even looking at album covers sparks a dozen happy memories.
You all know that I lost about 3 or 4 years of my journaling when GJ went offline. It's one of those things I'm not sure I'll ever get over. Sometimes I still check to see if it magically came back, or if it was ever Archived. I kick myself so often for not just buckling down and transferring them over more quickly. I lost something very valuable to me. I can't imagine if I lost all my journals, or all my photos. The mass majority of my photos are on facebook, with a good chunk saved to my computer, but I try to delete them off my camera/card, so I NEED those pics to stay online!
Or like, with Mikey, I'm never going to see him again. I'm SO glad I have pictures of and with him, and that other people do too, so I can always have access to his smiling face. One day it's going to be like that with my family, and even friends. It's comforting to know that I'll at least have the pictures and the memories to remember them.
