My asparagus was bad in my bento today and I did not notice until after I started eating it. I was cooking several dishes when I packed it, most of them pungent with fishy odors that my sensitive nose is not used to. It was horrible. It spread that disgusting taste into my rice D: So I just packed it up, not wanting to punish anyone else with the smell.

It haunted me all night. I am terrified of moldy food, and I associate "gone bad" with "is definitely moldy somewhere."

5 minutes ago, I couldn't take it anymore. It was me or the asparagus. So I dumped it in the big industrial garbage can and double-cleaned my container (grimacing at every waft of rottaragus that came my way) and high-tailed it out of there. *gag*  Steve didn't say anything to me about it, which leads me to believe he either A. Didn't notice, as is often the case with him, or B. Thought something was a little off but ate it anyway, which is also often the case. Props to him for suffering through it, that's for sure.

My fingers, especially my right index, hurt like crazy but I can't stop typing. It's like my livelihood. I must work on papers and finish charting on clients. Just wanted you to know about my asparahorror.

The fishy odors weren't unpleasant, they are just flavors added to a soup based I cooked with some water and tofu. Steve never gets spicy food because I usually make things for both of us, and I am a crybaby about the teeniest bit of spice, so I bought a soybean and a spicy soup base for each of us to cook our own tofu blocks in. So his had anchovies and clams, and mine had shrimp and mussels (just for flavoring - not chunks!). I thought it was a good way to start easing myself into seafood and hopefully prove to myself that I will not, in fact, die if I eat it. (^_^)v

And I KNOW. I have also determined that the rice is a bit stagnant from adding water to keep it moist. Steve insists it's normal, but IT IS NOT. It's not BAD, but it still offends my delicat sensibilities. So I put soy sauce on mine today and plan to throw the rest out tomorrow.

So exciting for you!! I LOVE my bento <3 I've been taking such good care of it!

Mmm. That is tricky. I'm not sure if flavored is the way to go with easing your way into seafood...'cause if someone tried to get me into beef using beef-flavored things I don't think I'd ever eat beef. And I love beef. Mmm. Beef.

Hmm. How are you keeping your rice? It sounds like you may be inadvertently soaking your rice and therefore getting close to sprouting your rice. This isn't bad--in fact, you'll be getting more nutrients that way, but it should be done properly, or you'll just mold your rice. Unless you've been making too much in too big of batches and then trying to keep it in the fridge for too long....in which case...o_o

YAY BENTO BOX! Although I now realize that we will have matching bento boxes. As if we needed more parallels. XD

Haha! That's true, I didn't even think of that. It lists those seafood items as ingredients (and like second and third at that), not like with ramen where it's just stock, but there appear to only really be chunks of veggies? And only a few. So... dunno!!! I plan on making a salmon dish in the coming weeks, though.

I store it in a (supposedly) airtight container. We currently have the california sticky rice, and it gets dry and chalky after a few days, so I just added a bit of water to keep it moist. I think I made too much rice, as I usually like it to last about a week, but with Steve having cut hours I guess I used too little of it. :(

Hahaha I thought of that too! But who could resist such a cute bento?!
