See, Harry Potter becomes "bad literature" for me because it bored me. It failed to entertain me as a complete series. I found myself painfully jolted from her world with certain huge problems in literary terms (namely in Book 2 that it would be IMPOSSIBLE for Harry Potter, given the information he possessed, to come to the conclusions he did, unless he did things that we did not see, which means that JK Rowling has failed to acknowledge that the narrator doesn't know everything that HP is doing, which would create a bizarre fanfic rich type of world). And yes, Rowling set up Voldemort as the Ultimate Villain from the get go, and that's all good. But, you can't try and "round out" characters like Harry, or Neville, or even Malfoy, without even addressing the flatness of the Deatheaters or Voldemort.
All it does for me is kick me out of the story, and I'm suddenly aware that I'm reading a book, by an author, written on paper, and I can't "see" anything beyond that. I really did enjoy the first three or so books though. The fourth was a little off-putting, and the fifth incredibly disappointing, but...it was the first series I ever stopped in the middle of a book in the middle of the series and never picked up ever again. I've now since had to do that with three others, but it's an incredible insult from me, since I read so fast that finishing things isn't exactly a real effort on my part. I just didn't feel she deserved it.
I totally agree--but I'm the last person in the world concerned with "purity of blood" issues, which is a big thing in Syltherin. Still, if JK Rowling had created a better world, there would have been people like me in Syltherin, and I would say, "I'd be like [insert silly sounding name here]." But of course, even her "Zuko" Snape wasn't like that. Just a bunch of flat stereotypes she couldn't be bothered making into real people. /bitter
